Speakers Bureau

What is SASF Speakers Bureau?

The SASF Speakers Bureau creates a bridge between students and professionals they might not otherwise meet. Volunteers are an important part of helping to close the opportunity gap for underserved youth in NYC by providing important insight, motivation and inspiration to prepare them for college and their future careers.

Why participate in the SASF Speakers Bureau?

This is an opportunity to share your career, education and life experiences with youth in underserved communities to engage and energize them to work hard to achieve their goals. Whether you are a young professional just starting out or have years of experiences to share, you have a lot to offer these students. Join us  to make a difference in the lives of these students.

How does the program work?

SASF’s after school programs usually take place between 3:00p.m.-6:00p.m. The visit typically lasts for one hour, with the speaker providing a brief overview of their life experiences and career for the first 20 minutes, followed by an informal Q&A discussion for the remainder of the time. Most of these visits are with a small group of 15-20 students. The students will receive the speaker’s bio beforehand, research the speaker’s field, and prepare questions to help facilitate meaningful discussions.

Is there an opportunity to provide additional enrichment for the students I meet?

We encourage opportunities for speakers to become mentors or to open their office or business to a field trip or job shadowing. We have had students visit an artist’s studio, and another student become an intern for one of our speakers. We hope this initiative will provide additional opportunity and resources to the young people we work with.

What types of people have you had as speakers?

We have had speakers from all walks of life, from young professionals to those with years of experience and a wide range of industries, from professionals in banking and advertising to lawyers and entrepreneurs to entertainment executives and sports agents. We are looking for people to share about the challenges they have overcome, what they are passionate about and how they have gotten to where they are.

Television and Radio Sports Broadcaster

“Having the opportunity to speak to New York City students through SASF is an inspirational and fulfilling experience for me! To be able to share insights about my career, the challenging path to success and the various ups and downs involved in dedicating your life to reaching career goals, enables me to truly connect with the students on an authentic level.  What SASF provides for these students is astounding, considering they would not have had these opportunities elsewhere. The combination of implementing sports and arts programs is a perfect combination for me to reach both groups because of my work experiences. The program’s leadership, teachers and counselors are examples of true heroes that live among us, enriching the lives of these youth and their futures.”

“I am grateful that I had the opportunity to share my career path and hope that it gave the students some food for thought. I was impressed with the school, the SASF program and most of all the students! I was supposed to motivate and inspire them but they were the ones that inspired me!”

“To have the chance to give information and literally see the light bulbs turning on when sharing with the students is one of the best feelings that I have ever felt in my life. The SASF program provides an opportunity for the world to be given to the children through first hand experience. Kudos to the people who dedicate their lives to making gifts like this available to the public. The feature that SASF offers to the youth is helping humanity in huge way!”
