Center for Sports and Wellness

The Center for Sports and Wellness is dedicated to improving both physical and nutrition literacy amongst under-served youth in New York City, through the implementation of sports, wellness and fitness programs. A wide variety of programs are delivered at SASF after-school sites that encourage children to play more, have fun and adapt healthy lifestyle habits. The Center for Sports and Wellness plays a critical role in building and supporting New York City Department of Education sports and wellness initiatives through delivery of our after-school programs, special events and clinics, as well as professional development.

After-School Programs

Children engage in a variety of different sports, wellness and fitness activities conducted by trained sports instructors. Activities include but are not limited to soccer, basketball, rugby, fencing, nutrition workshops and fitness challenges.

Saturday Leagues

Saturday flag football, basketball, soccer and softball leagues last 8-12 weeks. The leagues provide children with a chance to play sports on the weekends in a safe environment, participate in skill clinics, receive 1-on-1 coaching, and of course, have fun!

Tournaments and clinics are offered throughout the year to enhance SASF’s student experience, allowing them to play both traditional and nontraditional sports that may not be offered at their school or during their after-school program, like floor hockey, lacrosse, rugby and European handball.

Development of healthy lifestyles in our youth is a key component of SASF’s programming that is newly expanding. Nutrition and fitness programs are offered to students through cooking demonstrations, nutrition workshops, peer leadership and community engagement.

Special events include annual programs such as the Ice Bowl, Presidents’ Week 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, World Cup Soccer Event, Day of Champions, Girl’s Gym and Wellness/Fitness events.

Professional Development

The enrichment of sports professionals is behind the success of SASF programs, in both nontraditional and traditional sports, as well key areas like coaching philosophy on how to work with kids, best practices in areas of physical literacy and sports skills and basic safety.
